Formal causation is Aristotle’s cause of pattern: the form that makes a thing what it is. Why is it a vase and not a bowl? Not because of its clay (Material Causation) or its potter (Efficient Causation) - the same clay and the same hands could have made either - but because of the organizing pattern the material embodies. The formal cause answers the question of identity: what-it-is-to-be this thing. Aristotle domesticated Plato’s transcendent Forms by locating them in things - the idea not floating in a separate realm but at work in matter as its structure and intelligibility.
Formal causation names something explanation cannot actually do without, even where it goes officially unrecognized. The information in DNA, the body-plan the embryo unfolds toward, the wave-equation’s solutions, the archetypes structuring psychic life, the harmonic ratios of sacred geometry and the music of the spheres - all are patterns doing causal work that no inventory of particles and pushes captures. systems theory rediscovers it as organization: emergence is precisely the appearance of formal properties that the components’ efficient interactions underdetermine. Rupert Sheldrake’s morphic resonance - central to the Formscapes current - is a contemporary, contested attempt to give formal causation an explicit scientific mechanism.
Modern science’s decision to privilege only efficient and material causes renders form unreal - pattern becomes mere description, meaning a projection, and the resonances that speak to us specifically get relegated to the “merely” artistic. The critique running through the meaning crisis literature holds that this is a boundary of method mistaken for a boundary of reality: what resonates - in art, in vocation, in the harmonies one recognizes as one’s own - is formal causation felt from the inside. To perceive form is to know by participation in pattern, not by tracing mechanism.
Understanding formal causation means recovering pattern as an objective feature of the world rather than a human overlay: things have natures, structures have consequences, and what a thing is does real work that what it is made of cannot explain.
