The third clip extracted from my CCSBE series I get into how narrative is a foundational component of stress management, with the nervous system being a final line of defense.

Our nervous system acting up when faced with novelty is expected! Novelty is scary.

When we do new things more often, we build our capacity for change.

And I also wanted to highlight ego-driven leadership as often a thing that gets highlighted in entrepreneurial culture. Like I was at Startup Canada last week and a lot of the keynotes were like, “Well, I just did the hard thing and hustled and grinded and didn’t sleep and didn’t shower.” And I’m the best and I’m on TV now and look how great I am.

And that’s not necessarily correlated with the longevity of a company. Working in environments with ego-driven leadership generally results in less engaged employees, those companies are generally less adaptable to change because an ego doesn’t like to admit that it’s wrong.

And here we get into the first of the three toolkits I want to share and one is humility. So humility and humble leadership is really this idea of acknowledging our limitations, acknowledging when we’re outside of our comfort zone when we don’t know the answer to something.

I was talking to the gentleman from Angel Investors Ontario today over dinner and he was talking about how many times he gets burned by a founder who will not do this and will just lie their way through adversity. This blows up in our faces eventually. We have to acknowledge when we’re outside of our comfort zone and generally that makes us more valued as people to collaborate with as entrepreneurs.

Social Media Description

Expanding from my initial ideas shared on the role of narrative and how it comes to form our relationship with the environment, I speak about the particular values we attribute to certain labels.

In this context - it’s the different biases and images we have in our heads when we think about the label “entrepreneur” vs the label “creator.”

Not to say we can’t be both, but to point out that the stories we tell about either can create energetic barriers to stepping to our truth.

While a label never fully encompasses the depth of the Self, it can be helpful in forming our narrative and in turn, building our personal brand.
